Немного о покраске

I like to paint realistically (as far as I can!) and I think my method of digital anatomy painting is sort of a modified Anthony Ryder method. Anthony Ryder uses blocking in and contour lines for his pencil drawings. I try to do the same digitally. I use blocks and contour lines to start, drawing in the entire figure and then I begin to shade, colour and detail from there.

Brush Settings

I generally use only 2 brushes for all figure paintings. One is a textured brush and the other is a hard edged round brush. The only thing that changes about my brushes is their size and opacity. I never paint at full opacity, Im usually at 2% - 50%.

Painting with a low opacity brush enables you to achieve a smooth transition between tones. It gradually builds up the colour or value. The textured brush also helps to keep your transitions of colour or shading smooth. With a hard edge brush set to a higher opacity percentage, youll often see hard edges. See below.

Choosing Colours

I never use the eye dropper for picking my colours. I think learning how to paint means learning how to see and choose colours, plus you cant use a dropper on a live model!

If youre using a photo reference, as most of us are for OFDW, then you have the added luxury of breaking down your photos into tiles to see colour blocks more easily. Idea from Rebecca Kimmel.

1. Contour / Outline

Try to get in proportion as much as possible. It doesnt have to be perfect as you can adjust as you go.

2. Basic Colour

I usually start with one base colour, as close as possible to the overall skin colour. This is just my personal choice. I prefer to add values to a base skin colour rather than a blank screen.

3. Setting Basic Tones

My first painting step is to find the lights and the darks and paint them in over the entire body. Its better to set the values for the entire body at once, rather than piece by piece. I use all main colours for this stage.

4. Adding Colour and More Values

Here I introduce more variations in colour to the painting snd continue shading various shadows, contours and lighting areas.

5. Adding details

Once Im happy with the basic shading of the skin tones, I start to paint in details such as creases and folds.

6. Final Details and Highlights (below)

Minute details and final lighting.
Digital Painting from Life

I use the exact same process as detailed above for painting from life.

1. Contour / line drawing
2. Base colour
3. Basic tones and colour
4. More tones and colour
5. Final details

The only major difference is thatthe object youre drawing and painting is 3D rather than a nice, flat photo. Personally, I think finding the right colour is also a bit more difficult from life.

Whether youre painting from a photo or from life, pay attention to the details and paint what you see, not what you think you see.

With this study, my line drawing was very loose and quick. I probably made at least 50 adjustments over the course of this painting to various areas of the body. However, the original line drawing was very useful for the basic shading and colouring and I just fixed minor contours as I painted.

короче, всё элементарно)) как говорил один великий художник, "нет ничего проще живописи - надо просто взять краску нужного цвета и положить её на нужное место"
