How Did Michael Jackson Lean in Smooth Criminal

First of all, what does this have to do with Search? Using Google Patents Search, you can find all sorts of intresting things. For instance, Ironic Sans found this patent by Michael J. Jackson which outlines “A system for allowing a shoe wearer to lean forwardly beyond his center of gravity by virtue of wearing a specially designed pair of shoes which will engage with a hitch member movably projectable through a stage surface.”

Contrary to the original title of this post, the patent has nothing to do with how Michael Jackson performed his famous moonwalk. But it does reveal how he was able to pull off that 45-degree lean on stage and in the Smooth Criminal video. This website does a great job of spelling it out, Smooth Criminal video clip included.

Final Thought:
If Google’s goal is to “organize the world’s information” then I’d have to say they are doing a pretty good job of it. But I get the creepy crawlies when I think of Lord Acton’s oft-misquoted phrase: ”Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely“
