Women in Music: Taylor Swift
School's out but this country-pop sensation is just getting started

At work on a new album after her sophomore effort Fearless sold more than 3 million copies last year, the 19-year-old country-pop wunderkind talks to ELLE about what happens post–high school graduation.

ELLE: You started writing music when you were 12, and your first record came out when you were 16. How long were you actually in high school?

TS: I was in high school freshman and sophomore year, and then I went on the road. I homeschooled the rest of the way. My brother’s always calling me the dropout of the family.

ELLE: Do you even have a driver’s license?

TS: I did get my driver’s license in tenth grade, but I failed my permit test so many times that I ended up just bursting out crying the last time I went to the DMV. They gave [me a permit] because they felt bad, and I only missed it by one question.

ELLE: Do you ever feel like you missed out on typical teenage experiences?

TS: I actually did get high school experiences. I had a double life. During the day I walked around, talked to people, went to class, studied for tests, and had crushes on boys, and then after school I would go downtown to Music Row in Nashville and I would write songs about those experiences.

ELLE: About that: Do you ever think boys might be scared to date you because you’ll call them out in a song?

TS: Well, I figure that if he’s heading into the relationship knowing that he’s going to do something bad for me to write a song about, then that’s probably not someone I want to be interested in anyway.

ELLE: Do you have any boy drama to write about on your next album?

TS: There are definitely breakup songs on this record, but not too many. I like to balance out the amount of happy songs, breakup songs, sentimental songs, I-miss-you songs, angry songs. I don’t want to try and harp on the same emotion too much because I feel like if you make the “angry” album, that’s going to lose people.

ELLE: Who would you love to work with?

TS: John Mayer. He Twittered the other day that he wrote a song and he wants to make it a duet with me. I freaked out when I heard, because I’ve been such a big fan of John for such a long time. I’m really excited about just the idea that he would even mention me in his Twitter!
