The Rasmus's Lauri Ylönen is a musician, father and boater.

[caption] L says that his trademark hairstyle originated in middle school. At first it was rebellion, then it became a part of my persona.

About the band:

"Rasmus started at the Oranssi [orange] club. At our first gig only our friends and parents were present, the second time around we had 50 people present, and at our third gig there were already 100 people. That's where our career started. Our very first gig was in 1994 at Suutarila Middle School at our christmas party, in the gym which smelled of sock-sweat. We played Kummeli's classic series of Hän-Mies [he-man]. It was a much bigger hit than our own songs.

Back then we were Primus fans. And because Primus ends with an s, and I like words that end in 's', we named our band Rasmus. Now my sons name is Julius, which also ends in 's.'

It's amazing that even after all these tours and gigs, we bandmates call each other first thing if we're having a boring time at home. That's when we heat up the grill or go fishing.

Our guitarist Pauli has lived in Singapore for a year, but that hasn't slowed things down; we still arrive at the same time at a gig for example in Italy. We've planned that we'll spend Christmas together in Singapore, it'll be the bands first Christmas together under one roof."

About day to day life:

"For the past three years we've been making and recording songs for our new album Black Roses. A fight instinct woke in us, something that was missing last time. Perhaps it was because we had already achieved everything.

I've also composed music for a Finnish film, which will come out in theaters at the end of this year. It's been very therapeutic to do something completely different for a while.

I'm also working for our studio and record label. Right now I am the main producer for a certain project.

In October we're touring finland with mariko and the von herzen brothers, both of who are our record label's clients. A world wild tour will start in january from russia"

about interests:

"After a ten year long break I started drawing again:when I was younger I made graffiti's, back then I always had a pencil in my hand. Now i've designed our new album's cover.

I became interested in architecture when I had my house built; I was always surrounded by very talented people. I was very bossy with the project, I changed everything. The whole project started from scratch, now, 2 and a half years later the house is perfect.

I like the functionalist style [of architecture], and that's what the house is. However, it isn't cold, but clear and home-y. The same elements should be incorporated in music as well.

While on tour I like to walk around cities and look at architecture. Milano, for example is very fun to walk around. History is present at every corner. It's a shame that at school I through paper airplanes in history class. Nowadays I order history-magazine.

Something which I also like is taking care of my garden. I have one apple tree which only produced one apple this year. But it was big. I thought for a long time if I should make jam or pie out of it, but decided against both and instead ate the apple before the bunnies got to it or it fell out of the tree.

I also try to make time for cooking, it's relaxing. My best dish is fish soup"

About his passions:

"I just bought a motor boat, and a few books to study [boating] from. I've gone around helsinki alone and with friends. A whole new world opened up there. We had a really great sunday when we all got together and went to Suomenlinna [old war fortress in helsinki] to get some fish soup.

As a child I went fishing with my grandfather on a terhi-brand boat. We left from Herttoniemi to go fish for the whole night. Now I live and reminisce on the same waters.

I would like a good tutor, who could also teach me how to sail- It would be more ecological than going around on a motor boat. I could also participate in a campaign for cleaning the ocean, so that someday I could be a grandfather whose bait glides through the water."

about family:

"Julius is now 4 months old. I've gotten to know him over the past few months at home. Even today I played with julius the whole morning, and couldnt get myself to leave.

In the future daddy has to go on tour, which we have to organize somehow. Sometimes we've been on tour for 250 days of the year, but it might be a bad idea to have Julius come along with us on tour. Touring is selfish and hard both physically and mentally; Sleeping nights on the bus, first thing in the morning are interviews, then soundcheck, more interviews, the gig, and the after-party.

All of the members of our band have kids, so the others have given good tips. Other bands, like Kent and Apocalyptica have also given a few hints. Fatherhood is a big thing, you can't mess it up."

About getting older:

"I'm not scared of getting older. Right now I want to create a safe and happy childhood for my son.

The Rasmus's aging shows up only in their lyrics. We've made 7 albums with approx. 2 years in between each. They're like parts of our journals. I laughed and cried when I listened to them. I bought them from iTunes for the new album.

I believe that we can keep going for a long time. The first 14 years have gone by well. If we can somehow avoid falling out or a total musician's block, I believe that when I'm 50 we just might be releasing the 17th Rasmus Album!"

Interview 2008 Emma Gala

In english:

Rasmus-Lauri soon to become a father

Interviewer: You're going to become a father next month, how does it feel?
Lauri: It feels great. Let's hope that it's a healthy baby that comes home and we'll see what happens after that.
Interviewer: What kind of father will you be?
Lauri: I don't want to comment on this one. I'm under pressure. It's going to be just fine.
Interviewer: What is your new album like?
Lauri: It's the ultimate Rasmus album! Now what we got some perspective when it comes to making music we combined the old and new Rasmus.
Interviewer: And the hair has changed back to old as well!
Lauri: Yeah, that too! It's like a surgery that makes me look younger.
Interviewer: I sense there's a crisis coming with the age?
Lauri: Absolutely
Interviewer: Will Rasmus throw any festival gigs during summer?
Lauri: That's still a bit unclear but we will do at least a few Finnish festival gigs. It's nice.
Interviewer: What about the foreign countries?
Lauri: We've recorded the album there so some little activities I guess. All in all it's going to be a very quiet summer. We'll save all the energy to autumn when the album is released.

Forum Interview with Pauli and Aki Nov 2007

1. What is it like to work with Desmond Child and Michael Wagener? They both have worked with some amazing people. What have they taught you throughout the recording process?

P: Its been highly interesting to work with Desmond. To see how he works and writes , see and learn different techniques of music composing. Expanding horizons and learning something new is one of my passions and this really has been it. ive learned to take in new things and also learned to keep my head in things that i know im good.

A: It was very easy to work with M.W, While recording it was weird to have one German(he's originally from GER), one half swedish/half finnish (Harry sommerdahl) and 2 Finnish guys(me &Lauri) at the studio somewhere in the last corner of Nashville US,hehe. Extremely professional and nice guy!!! He's been around so many years, working with so many bands (metallica, skid row etc) We heard so many good stories from him!!
Also some of the recording technics were a little different than we've been using before.

2. Why did you choose an American producer for this album? What are some advantages and disadvantages to working with a new producer versus working with the familiarity you had?

A: We´ve been working with the same swedish producers on the last 3 albums and they've done an excellent job, but we thought that it would be time for something new.

P: yeah, a rolling stone gathers no moss. we gots to keep fresh.

3. What made you decide to work on the album in Nashville instead of recording and producing it completely in Finland?

A: Cause Michael Wagener has a great studio in Nashville and Desmond also lives there so it was natural, and i think it's easier to concentrate on the recordings if you do it somewhere else than in Finland. But i think Pauli and Eero felt very comfortable recording in Helsinki.

P: I always thought that i dont wanna record in finland, since there is way too much temptations and excuses not to work and someone calling and asking for a coffee/lunch/friends visiting studio. But as we been touring so much, i personally felt very happy to work in finland and actually having friends over and coffee/lunch.
And Of course we had to go to USA, cus they have the "american drum sound" Smile

4. Has being in Nashville with all its music history affected the album or your views? Have you had time to see Nashville and, if so, what have you seen? Have you traveled down to Memphis to see Graceland or over to Dollywood?

A: Yes, the album will have lots of country music influences...hehhe. In Nashville i was amazed how good musicians they have. In every bar there was a band playing, and they all sounded SO good. Lauri is there at the moment and he will stay there longer period, so i think he will get more out of Nashville...But what i saw and experienced was something nice and i hope to go there again.

5. I've heard you've been called an "office band" keeping a regular routine, are you keeping that type of work ethic here in The States? Could you explain a regular day "at the office"?

A: Heheheheh, that was an old joke. Some years back we had our band rehearsals in the mornings and it felt like going to the office...but anyway it worked for us and we did great album after that hard work!

P: its good to be office band. do work 1st with passion and relax when its relaxing time.

6. Have recent world or personal events changed any of your ideas for the album or did you have solid ideas before you headed into the studio?

P: we basically never have any solid ideas about anything (as a band or as a individuals hahahaha joking joking) ...recent world and personal events inspire, change us and our music all the time.
Im always terrified to go to studio and feel that all of our songs suck. but then when we got the 1st tracks down and start to visionize/visualize/hear/know/whatever the songs, then all horror is gone. the rest is just great.

7. What is the reasoning behind calling the new album "Black Roses"? Is this a working title? Is it possible it will change?

A: Everythings possible....It sounds good at the moment, but you never know if it will change...What do you say??

P: well Aki, i say that thats it! Lets not change it. heheh

8. Will the album be released simultaneously worldwide or will the release be delayed in the US?

A: Good question, hehehe, well i don't know, but i think that US release will be delayed...

P: wow...never even thought about that...im just a songwriter and guitarist, how could i know???

9. Do you hope to be able to tour the US with this new album? Will you attempt to tour areas of the country you haven't been before?

A: Would be great to do tour in the US everywhere!!! We had great time last year when we played 4 weeks together with Lost Prophets!!

P: of course

10. Recently a friend of mine sent me some video footage of the band from 1996 to 1998. How have you changed from that time? What do you miss from the early days?

P: 20kg more...hahaha. i miss the innocence, and crazy braveness of exploring the world.

11. As you have grown older how has the way you have toured changed? How do you see it changing in the future?

A: We love touring so I think we'll tour a lot, but maybe we will plan the tours better.

P: ...getting just more diva heheh. basically we spend more time in tour bus and hotel than in own home
so think its ok to want some nice comfortable touring, since is big part of life for us.

12. What is it about music that you really, truly love?

A: Strong feelings that i get.

P: i love everything about music. Lately im loving most writing a song and see it became alive and having its unique own feeling.

Rhetorical silly question of the interview: Why do woman in Finland have to pay a euro for the public toilets when men get to use them for free?! Smile

A: You have to pay for that?!?! Didn't know, never went to one...need to try that, maybe they are cleaner...

P: thats true. but finnish men dont use toilets even if its free. Smile
