Pin-back buttons made their first significant appearance in the late 19th century when cigarette and gum manufacturers began to include them in their packs for promotional value. The pins were manufactured with both open backs and closed backs. The open-back varieties included a paper advertisement insert that served to remind customers of the product.

Cigarette companies renewed this promotional initiative around 1910, commissioning several comic artists to fashion a series of celluloid pins. The pins were produced in color, black line on white background and white line on dark blue background.

Political campaigns made pin-back buttons popular in the late ‘20s and early ‘30s. Political pin-backs of this era have become highly valuable collectables for many button enthusiasts.
