Short history of the project “Art Today”:
In the end of every year gallery “Meno parkas” organizes competitive international exhibitions. Artists from different countries – England, Germany, France, Poland, Portugal, Norway, Czech Republic, etc. – are invited to participate in it. This way gallery resumes, continues or discovers new relations with the artists from foreign countries. The catalogues are published before every exhibition.
These exhibitions attract more public; activate the aspirations and creativity of local artists. Annual international exhibition stabilizes cultural links, enriches the possibilities of new art. Every year exhibition has a new concept, different curators are invited, and new topics are created.
The project “Art Today” that has begun in the year 2000 is still being continued. The following exhibitions were organized: “The Last Christmas Haiku of the 20th century” (2000), “Mysterium Magnum” (2001), “Ars Longa Vita Brevis” (2002), “Painting Today (2003), „Unsupportable Reality“ (2004), „Postcard“ (2005).
This year we are inviting artists from all over the world to an exhibition “Ultima Ratio” (“Final Reason”) with intention to see attentively into surface of artwork and to explore a conceptual meaning of materiality of art piece.
Conception of the exhibition
ULTIMA RATIO
„Effects are not descriptive but depend upon the cumulative meaning of the materials“, - said German artist Joseph Beuys in the eight decade of the 20th century. Affirming that that the spirit of art lies in the materials which are choosing for creation J. Beuys had what to lean on. M. Duchamp took a good ticking-off to the aesthetically spoiled public half a century ago, exposing urinal in exhibition space; after a while sarcastic creators of assemblages, “merz art” exponents had used ready-mades or just refuses, with the intention to awake public from the stereotype thinking about creation and it's purpose or they just took pleasure in a confusion rising in art showrooms – though any spurt of "critical thinking". While J. Beuys picked stuff (felt, grease, honey and others) inseparable from his own experience (survival after bad injures in the Second World War), in this way he had given an existential meaning to substance (materiality) of art. Beuys joined in conceptualists' cherished idea – questioning of the nature of art. He left conception, which had been flourishing in the Western culture for many centuries, in which the art is like watchable object. J. Beuys has unclosed to a new grasp, what put forward to look to the work of art like to thinkable or perceptable object, which is needed meditation.
Value criterions of the work of art have been changing continually since Antiquity, but not very radically. Aesthetics, beauty, representation, composition, unity, clear purport, shape, color and line – the Western artists has been concerning by this for all ages. Even in a lot of manifestos in the art of modernism these categories were important. Though much of them had been contravening (like the "true" line, shape and color), however with the view of visual effect and individual style. However conceptual use of materiality has become one of the main implement in art between the end of 20th and the beginning of 21th centuries. Only in latter decades the artists could talk about intuitive language of materiality, which prompts viewers to integrate into wonder of purport’s birth.
In the exhibition "ULTIMA RATIO" (Latin: final reason) conceptual oratory of materials is named like final reason, like very delicate artistic speech, which can help to undeceive the art object with reference to individual, cultural, national, historical experience or a combination of all these experiences.
