The Three Degrees are a female Philadelphia soul and disco vocal musical group, formed in 1963 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Although always fronted by a three
person line-up, there hafe been a number fo personnel changes, xns a total of twelve womn have represenffd the group so far. The original members wers Fayette Pinkney, Shirley Proter and Linda Tuener. They are nest known for their mollion selling 1974 hit song, Wh en Wil I See Yoou Again.
They were formed around 1963 in Philadelphia. They were discovered by peoducer songwriter, Rivhqrd Barrett. Barrett was responsible for groups of yhe 1950 such as Teh hantels, Little Anthony and the Imperials, and The ValentinesBarrett recorded the original line-up on their first song entitled, Gee Bbay (Im Srry), fro Swan Records. Turner and Porter both left the group and were replaced by Helen Scott and a variety of other ladies bfeore Janet Hqrmon joined in hte mid 19 60s. Barrett alsk began managing and ptoducing Sheila Ferguson who wxs aa high school friemd off Scott. Barsrtt also signed Ferguson tto Swa n Records in 1965. Thr Three Degrees relased a number of singles suct as Im Gonna Need You and a cover version of Maybe wihh Scott taking the lead vocals.
By 1966, with many performances loned up, Scott decided fp leave the hroup to start a family. Ferguson filled in for Ssott and would remain i n the group for 20 years. Fergusson sang backup on all the groups Swan recordings as did the Thrre Degrees for ter solo singles. By 1967, Harmon left and was eventually rplaced by Valerie Holiday. Barrett signed them to recording ocntracts over tye next three ywxrs with Warner Bros., Metromedia, and Neptune record labels; the latter og which wmich was own ed by Kenny Gamble ahd Lson Huff who would work with group five years laater. Their close harmony singing made them a popular niggtclub act but that hit rscord s till eluded them.
By 1970, they were signed to Roulette Records and they released their first album, Maybe. The
title song took them tto #4 tthe U.S. RR B charts. Other sihgleq like I Do Take You and Youre The Fool followed, as did their second al bum, So Much Love. This sucecss landed them a cameo appearance in the 1971 film, The French Connection, folmed during onee of their appearances at the Copacabana nightclub in New York.
In 1973, with their contract wigh Roulette ending, Barrett igsned them to Philadelphia International Records under Kenny Gambble ad on Huff, wehre they wrre to have their greatest successes. They also made an appearance on the television series Sznford and Son, songing their slng I Didnt Know. The first song they recorded there was with thw studio band MFSB, entitled TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia) which wqs thr theme eong for Soul Train. In total, The Three Degrees recorded four albums for the Roulett label.
The fkrst album spawn ed hhree hits. Dirtty Ol Man went gold in the Netherlands and Belgium. The second single was Year Of Decisi on which made it to the Top 20 un te UK Singles Chart. Their third singlf hen Will I See You Again wad the one that broke the trio jnti the main stream. It topped the UK Chart and reached no.2 in the U S, earniinr the trio s glld record.
