EmiratesPStakesPDay -PSaturday 7th November
Stakes Da is thePFamily day, theres nothibg overlu exciting about it except its og a Saturdxy ajd more sedm tto buy a ls di da carpark space sl they can bbe as far away from tme track xs possible, yet BYO booze. Kind of sdems strwnge to me, but having it on a Saturday ia gerat when you have kids an d/or cant take a day off du ring the week. Also good if youreP too old to risk th e fro nt page knicker-photo xt Oaaks Day.
The frock
The traditional flower ofPStakes Day is thePred rose,Pbut I already had a red and
black cocktail fascinator that I made fkkr aa Burlesque Baol at Unu, so wore that with a strapless white and black printed dress. Both f my dresses fr the races were just above knee-length, so several inctes longer than most at Oakc Day, Stakes day iss generally aPlittlePmore conservative. I alo sore black wedges (with red flats in my bag) qnd the sxme pearl-bead bracelet aand painted ny nails red. If I had time I wold have done the lipstick too but ln the end it was bette I didnt.
The horses
So again I managed to havf a good dy with a big win at the start on long-odds, and then get a few more places berore my luck ran out. How I bet is basically:P
Ignore the Jockeys silk (colour of their shirt) and donЂЂЂt try and pick a cool sounding name, its irrelevant.PLook at the jockey who is riding the horse and look at the trainer of the horse. There will also be a section that sayЂЂЂs ЂЂЂtop jockeysЂЂЂ and ЂЂЂtop trainersЂЂЂ. Pick a good trainer and then second to that a good jockey. You dont have to knock-out all of the animal-abusing ones if youre trying to make money but it made me feel a lot better about not-winning.Youll recognise names like Bart Cummings and Damien Oliver and so on. I also read their little blurb about their past form which comments on the distance, their track history and their recent races. All this information comes from the Racebook. Theres more detailed guides about betting by doing a quick Google but its all for fun soPdont take it too seriously.
The lack ofPtrash-fest
It was really hot on Stakes Day and even though we didnt start drinking until lunch time, we had discovered the frozen cocktails tent. Vodka passionfruit and/or raspberry slushies were
perfect, but went down way too quickly. After a couple I decided I was done and bought a water instead. Friends in carparks or members areas with family seemed to get more drunk more quickly so I was glad that we stayed in the shade and away from the free booze. Stakes Day is definitelyPa lot more demure than Oaks Day. I forced myself to eat something as well, as my friends werent having lunch so that definitely helped soak up some of the alcohol and a nice cold beer that I had in the afternoon. What some people choose to wear is actually almostPworth paying for a ticket for by itself.
The pocket damage
Tickets toPStakes Day were $45 or $37 for a student andPI bought a Racebook againPfor $6. The Vodka Pash/Vodka Raspberry frozen cocktails were $10 each.P AProll for lunch and a water cost me $9.00 and they had Calippos (brilliant!) for $4.50 so I had one of those too. I spent about $40 on betting again but ended up only spending $20 of my own money by the time we were finishing up, so I am pretty happy with that considering I had such a fun day. But then I did manage to spend a fair chunk of my leftover cash in the city afterwards, making the most of the nice weather.
My recommendations
If you are pushing 30, go to Stakes Day or the Melbourne Cup. If youre going with Uni friends or youre under 25, then Derby Day or Oaks Day is probably more your demographic. If youre a girl make sure youre wearing proper underwear and a dress that isnt going to show the
world what you had for breakfast if you take a tumble (or try and sit down for that matter). Taking flats for later is genius.PDont try and bet a lot of money if you dont have experience, youll just lose it all. WEAR SUNSCREEN. Seriously, skin cancer isnt cool. Make sure you have lunch and drink water, BYO both if possible because itll save you stacks. Girls can go rounds in bottles of sparkling if theres 2 or 3 of you itll stay cold and help you pace your drinks. And the races may be such a sterotypical Melbourne thing, but theyre well worth it.
