Negombo is a town of about 121,933, approximately 37 km north of Colombo, in Sri Lanka. It is located at the mouth of the Negombo Lagoon.
Negombo is Sri Lanka's oldest beach resort, popular with tourists for many years, Famous as a fishing town. Negombo is one of the main cities in country based with tourism and airport related, 7 km from the Bandaranayake International airport and so became popular for stays on arrival or before departure form the Sri Lanka.
Sinhalese refer to the Negombo as Mee-gamuwa, meaning The Village of Honey (or Bees) according to a strory swarm of bees settled in a boat ashore, the place the boat was pulled became meegamuwa.
Tamil name is Nir-Kolumbo. meaning ‘Columbo in the water’
