Сэр Лоренс Альма-Тадема (1836—1912) был одним из самых известных художников своего времени. Голландец по происхождению, Альма-Тадема переехал в 1870 году в Англию, где сделал успешную карьеру. За своё творчество он был щедро награждён титулами и званиями. Сцены из жизни Древнего Рима, Греции и Египта, созданные художником в стиле неоклассицизма, пользовались огромной популярностью в викторианской Англии. Английский живописец нидерландского происхождения, он был не только мастером исторической живописи и знаменитым художником-символистом XIX века, но и основоположником стиля прерафаэлитов. Всей живописи Альмы-Тадемы свойственно колористически светлое звучание.
