In the early 20th century, rapid growth of industrial production, growth of large cities and the development of trade in them, require new retail space. Architecture by that time already had a new building features: steel produced large window glass, metal, widely used as a load-bearing elements in buildings that provides a spacious commercial premises, often large-span, and the thin metal bridge windows, allowing make the facade a large spectacular glass surface. Trading houses plowed all their windows wide open, inviting visitors warmly glowing lights inside, lured by beautiful windows. Department of the early 20th century - the temple of commerce, its facades decorated with sculpture, monograms owners, gilding, mosaics and spectacular lanterns.

Let's go to Helsinki. The first building built specifically for commercial purposes was the House Lindqvist (Lundqvistin liiketalo) at the corner of Mikonkatu. Now there is a department store Aleksi 13. Built-known Finnish architect Selim A. Lindqvist in 1900. It still can not be assigned to the buildings of the Northern Art Nouveau, known in Helsinki, is the most European yugendshtil with elements of Gothic style popular at the time. Gable roof, "rib" of bricks and facade, but the large windows, which became omen trade department. It should be noted characteristic of modernity the use of different materials: granite on the ground floor and red brick on the upper floors.

On the corner of the building posed a tower decorated with colorful mosaics on the "gothic" theme.

The building is decorated with sculpture. Finnish sculptor Robert Stigel (Robert Stigell) studied in St. Petersburg, Rome and Paris. He created several allegorical bronze statues. This figure Spinning and Hunt (Kehruu ja Metsästys). In the hands of a woman, symbolizing the hunt - the rope and spear; Spinning in allegory in the hands of a skein of wool, from which it makes yarn. The choice of these allegories was associated with the commercial purpose of the building and represented the Finnish crafts and traditional occupations. At the same time it could be seen as an image of the goddess of hunting and the protector of forest goddess Artemis and crafts, arts and wisdom, Athena.

"" 1908—1909, . 1913—1914 Unionkatu, 30. , , , . , , . .

Trading house "Vuori" built by architect Hermann Gezelleus in 1908-1909, built on A. Lindgren in 1913-1914 on the street Unionkatu, 30. The fact that the building was overbuilt, said that there was a shortage of office space. Gesellius applied projecting glass bay window, which increased the amount of light in the room, there's rays began to fall from three sides. To the north of the city that was important.

DSCN9264.JPG

The building is decorated with symbolic sculptures: science, craft and industry, the sculptor Felix Nyulund.

At the same time in St. Petersburg were built well-known trading houses are still used successfully for other purposes.

Shop Eliseev Brothers on the corner of Malaya Sadovaya street and Nevsky prospect. And I must say that if there really was quite something to buy. The shops were built three in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kiev.
The building of the St. Petersburg store Eliseev Gabriel Baranovsky was designed and constructed in 1902-1903. I would like to note the influence of taste hosts who were still traders rather than aristocrats. Catchy luxury should demonstrate commercial success and prosperity of the company. The style of these buildings even came to be called "merchant modernity."

Trading house is a huge three-story building height equal to the six-story. Mainly on the facade it is a huge stained glass window.

Immediately drew the attention of the huge stained-glass windows on both fronts-visual light, with an openwork metal frame.

On the second floor of the building housed a bank, commercial courses based liseyev and the hall, rent a theater troupe is now located here Comedy Theatre. In the basement were warehouses, refrigerators and one of the best wine cellars in Europe.
The building is crowned by a roof with fanciful turrets.

.. :"", "", "" "". , , . , , - .

The building is decorated with sculptural groups of works AG Adamson: "Industry", "Trade", "art" and "science." Since the house was built Gesellius later, it can be assumed that similar symbolic sculptures were influenced by the capital's department store. Comparing these two buildings, you can see the difference between early, lush and eclectic modernity Baranovsky and stingy, already close to the style of Art Deco Art Nouveau Gesellius.

1911—1912 . . . . . : , .. - , , . . . . , , : , - .

Mertens House was built in 1911-1912 by architect M.S. Lyalevich. The building for the firm fur F.L. Mertens built on Nevsky Prospect. The project was applied entirely new engineering and artistic solutions: monolithic reinforced concrete load-bearing structure of the building and three huge glazed arches that adorn its monumental facade. The building is close to neoclassicism - the circular arch, instead of complex shape, as is often done during the Art Nouveau. It uses the classic order. It is interesting to compare it with the department store Gesellius. On the facade of the building is also three arches over which is the upper floor. If that project were the floors are built later, here they are already part of the project. Location of premises such as in Helsinki layout: on the first floor of a large trading rooms upstairs - office space department.
