Red Rose Topiary… a gift for you

Суббота, 06 Октября 2012 г. 20:32 + в цитатник

I have a gift for you today … a little topiary rose design and the completed picture to serve as a guide.

It is quick to make…and you may finish it in time for a Christmas gift!

Use spider-web roses and ribbon stitch for the roses and leaves. Add a few French knots in between…

Spider-Web Rose

Spider-Web Rose is a lovely stitch to use for beautiful, realistic roses.

Use one or two strands of thread to make five foundation spokes

Change to 4 or 7mm silk, or 6mm organza ribbon.

Thread up and come up in the centre of the spoke.

Give the ribbon a slight twist – insert needle it under and over the foundation stitches, until the spokes are no longer visible.

Hint 1: Any foundation stitches that are showing on the side of the completed rose can be covered with leaves a little later.

Hint 2: Use a gentle tension as you weave the ribbon under and over the spokes so that a soft, open rose is formed.

Ribbon stitch

ribbonstitch

Ribbon stitch is probably the stitch which is the most used stitch of all the stitches in ribbon embroidery.

To make the stitch, pierce the ribbon before taking the needle to the back. Hold the stitch with your finger as you pull the ribbon through your fabric and stop pulling as soon as the stitch curls up on the edge. If you pull the ribbon too far, it becomes a straight stitch. Don’t worry, simply make another stitch on top – this adds texture to your design :)

If you pierce the ribbon on the right edge (see diagram in the middle) the stitch will curl up to the right. If you pierce the ribbon close to the left edge the stitch will curl up to the left.

French knot

frenchknot

French knots are ideal filling stitches for background trees and other detail. Also useful for the centre of flowers.

  • For finer detail, use one strand of thread (separate one strand from the six)
  • For a heavier texture: use 2 or 4mm silk ribbon or perlé thread.
  • Come up from the back and wrap the thread or ribbon two or three times around the needle.
  • Insert the needle back into the fabric, close to where the thread emerged.
  • Pull the thread to the back to form the knot.
To form loose, frilly knots, be sure not to tighten the wraps around the needle before taking it to the back of your work.
Hold the wraps as you take the needle and thread to the back and you will see how it makes lovely circular shapes. ideal for filling in background detail.
