The Diagnostic Writing Service (DWS) is available for students and teachers to assess current writing skills against college-level expectations. The essay writing services allows individual students to write an essay in response to an actual EPT essay prompt and to submit the essay via the Internet. A university English Placement Test (EPT) reader uses the scoring rubric of the EPT test and assesses student writing against the standards expected of entering college students. Specific diagnostics statements are provided to the student in a timely manner via the Internet. In addition to an overall assessment of the essay, the diagnostic statements inform the student about the strengths and weaknesses of the student's writing. Students can work independently to improve their writing in response to the diagnostic feedback. The DWS is also intended as a teacher-mediated program that encourages high school teachers to become familiar with college-level expectations for writing, to have access to the relevant diagnostic information for their class as a whole, and to incorporate the DWS and related materials into their curricula.

Through the assignments they make, faculty have the power to influence students' development as seekers and users of information. Many students are not "information literate" when they arrive at the University or begin work in a new subject area. They may not understand how to locate relevant information, or how to think critically about the information sources they encounter. Their coursework is often the only opportunity for them to learn the difference between "surfing the Net" and substantive research. A well-designed assignment can teach students valuable research skills and improve the quality of their online term papers. Unfortunately, assignments also have the potential to confuse and frustrate students, leading to a poorly-written product. Here are some suggestions to keep in mind when developing assignments that require library or Internet research.

For all who have taken history courses in college, the experience of writing a college research papers is etched indelibly in memory: late nights before the paper is due, sitting in pale light in front of a computer monitor or typewriter, a huge stack of books (most of them all-too-recently acquired) propped next to the desk, drinking endless cups of coffee or bottles of Jolt cola. Most of all, we remember the endless, panicked wondering: how on earth was something coherent going to wind up on the page - let alone fill eight, or ten, or twelve of them? After wrestling with material for days, the pressure of the deadline and level of caffeine in the body rise enough, and pen is finally put to paper. Many hours later, a paper is born - all too often something students are not proud to hand in, and something professors dread grading. "Whatever does not kill us makes us stronger." While Nietzsche may sometimes have been right, he likely did not have writing history papers in mind. On the contrary, I sometimes wonder if students' bad experiences writing papers does not drive some them away from history. How can we make this process less traumatic, more educational, and ultimately more rewarding for all concerned?

The Creeks

Indian warfare, sometimes stirred by savage resentment against white encroachments and cruelty, sometimes fanned by French or Spanish intrigue, frequently flared on the Carolina borders. During the War of Spanish Succession South Carolinians made several forays against the savage allies of the enemy. Under the leadership of Colonel James Moore, they fell on the Apalache Indians of northern Florida in January 1704 and won a decisive victory over these Spanish Indians. The slaves and plunder from this campaign more than paid the cost. The dream of the Carolinians was to wipe out the French base at Mobile, but in this they never succeeded. A disastrous uprising of the Tuscaroras in 1711 resulted in the massacre of hundreds of North Carolinians and required aid from South Carolina to prevent an even worse debacle. The most calamitous struggle with the Indians occurred between 1715 and 1718 and is known in South Carolina history as the Yemassee War, after the tribe which bore the brunt of the war with the whites. Many other tribes, however, including the Creeks, and to a small degree, the Cherokees, were involved in this outburst of long smouldering resentment against the lawlessness, the tyranny, and the general knavery of the Carolina traders. Softened by use of the white man's goods, the Indians had given up their traditional crafts and had come to depend upon the traders for weapons, clothing, blankets, and rum. As the red men grew less selfsufficient, the traders became more arrogant and avaricious. Moreover they freely violated the customs and mores of the tribesmen and even made jests of their prowess in debauching the wives of the Indian hunters.

But at best Indian relations were tricky and uncertain and the trade required courage and skill if the traders were to preserve their business and their lives. From two to three hundred men, many of them hardbitten Scots, were constantly employed by the merchants of Charles Town in the Indian traffic. During the spring the traders made a rendezvous in Charles Town. Then the cobblestones echoed with the tramp of their packhorses and the riverside was crowded with their dugouts. They came to receive the annual renewal of their licenses and to obtain a stock of trading goods. In some cases they went out as independent traders; more often they were agents of local merchants. Many of these men stood in some jeopardy of the law and came into Charles Town only upon sufferance. Try writing service now and receive your homework prepared by reliable writersFearing neither God nor the devil, they were as lawless as they were ruthless and greedy. For many years they brought back strings of Indian captives for the slave markets, along with their packs of deerskins, and the only scruple which they knew was that of prudence in not offending powerful tribes who might seek vengeful retaliation.
Before the end of the seventeenth century, the Charles Town traders had established two great trails to the interior. One ran northwesterly from Charles Town until it reached the mountains and tapped the Cherokee country; another went much farther to the west, beginning near where the. modern city of Augusta, Georgia, now stands and stretching to the country of the Chickasaws on the Mississippi. In time other trails, or "paths" as they were called, pushed still farther into the back country until Carolina traders had grown familiar with a vast territory from the southern Appalachian Mountains to the Gulf of Mexico. As the eighteenth century wore on, British tentacles, which reached out from South Carolina in the southwest as they also reached from New York to the northwest, grappled tenaciously with the French in the bitter rivalry for commerce and empire. South Carolina and New York, by their geographical position and their commercial enterprise, were the two colonies with the greatest stake in the outcome of the recurring struggles with France.

The great rivals of the English traders in the eighteenth century were the French who had established themselves on the lower Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico. Pierre Le Moyne, Sieur d'Iberville, in 1699 built a fort at Biloxi. In 1702 Jean Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville, founded Mobile and in 1718, New Orleans. Meanwhile other French explorers had come down the Mississippi from the French outposts in the north. From their various bases French coureurs de bois pushed up the streams and displayed great talents in making friends with the Indians. Though the Spaniards were not the equal of the French in enterprise, they too remained formidable rivals of the British on the southern frontier, for, despite their evil name in the West Indies, they were fairly easy-going in Florida and made loyal allies of some of the savages. Though the British were ruthless in their exploitation and showed small talents for diplomacy, they had one great advantage in trade: their blankets, their cloth, their guns, and their powder and shot were more desired by the Indians than anything the French had to offer--and their rum was cheaper than French brandy. The shrewdest of the Indians, however, soon perceived that they could play one nationality against another in the race for trade and empire--a game which the Creeks continued on the Georgia frontier until well after the Revolution. A constant struggle took place for the favor of the powerful tribes and various shifts in alliances occurred in the course of the years. In general the Choctaws remained allies of the French while the Chickasaws were usually in alliance with the British. The Cherokee nation in the mountains and foothills early came into the area of British domination and the Creeks for the most part favored the British.

The Eyes Of The Colonists

Дневник

The expansion of South Carolina was closely connected with the colony's Indian policy. At first, the Charles Town settlers had been content to maintain a defensive position against the Spaniards and their savage allies, but before long the Carolinians became more active. Within a few years they were competing with the Spaniards and the French for Indian trade in the backcountry of upper South Carolina and what is now Georgia, and English traders soon pushed all the way to the Mississippi and Gulf coast of Alabama.
The pioneer explorer was a surgeon, Dr. Henry Woodward, who had chosen in 1666 to leave Captain Robert Sandford's ship at Port Royal and remain with the Indians to learn their language. He later joined the Charles Town colonists and became an Indian agent for the proprietors and a trader on his own account. Woodward's own interests sometimes conflicted with the colonists', as in 1680 when the Carolinians annihilated or enslaved the Westo Indians, with whom Woodward had a profitable trade. Woodward performed a service of immense importance to South Carolina in opening the eyes of the colonists to the possibilities of traffic with the Indians of the whole southwest. French and German Swiss

French and German Swiss, recruited by Jean Pierre Purry of Neufchatel, an eloquent promoter of emigration to South Carolina, arrived in the autumn of 1732. Do you strive to check if your document fits requirements of professional cv? Purry selected a site on the Savannah River, more than twenty miles from the mouth, and established a township there. Within a year, nearly three hundred Switzers had found a home in this unhealthy locality and were attempting to introduce the growing of silkworms. New recruits took the places of the immigrants who died of malaria and, though the settlement never flourished, it persisted as a southern outpost of the colony. For years it struggled to produce silk and as late as 1772 Purrysburgh exported 445 pounds of raw silk.
Switzers, chiefly German, continued to look to South Carolina as a haven in the 1730's. They were responsible for the settlement of Amelia and Orangeburg townships in the central interior where the upland was better drained and the climate more conducive to health than in the swamplands of the coast. Most of the Germans who came to South Carolina before 1750 were German Swiss, though a few Germans from the Palatinate and the lower Rhineland boarded the immigrant ships which sailed ordinarily from Rotterdam. These German Swiss mingled with English and Scottish pioneers who gradually pushed inland and made the Up Country something more than an Indian hunting ground. Cattle raising and the growing of grain and corn brought a moderate prosperity to the newcomers. The movement toward the Up Country which began in the 1730's gained momentum with increasing immigration until the Piedmont region--the country of rolling hills and red clay subsoil-was dotted with frontier settlements. During the early years, the impenetrable swamps and the hostility of the Indians had served to confine the settlers to the coastal region around Charles Town, but wars of attrition had gradually broken the resistance of the unfriendly tribes and exploration had shown that good land lay beyond the swamps and pine barrens.

The freedom and opportunities of South Carolina induced even New Englanders to seek their fortunes in the South. For example, a congregation of Puritans in 1695 settled Dorchester, named after the town of their origin in Massachusetts. To maintain their morale under the softening influence of the South Carolina sun, Cotton Mather supplied them with pamphlets and tracts from his pen. A certain morbid gloom helped them keep their fear of the Puritan Jehovah. Elder William Pratt, for instance, kept a journal in which he enumerated the ills likely to befall saints and sinners alike. "A little after this," he sadly notes on January 3, 1698, "there was many died with the smallpox, that distemper growing more mortal than before, and the 24th day of February following there was a great fire in Charles Town which burnt down a great part of the town, and a few days before the fire there was an earthquake in Charles Town." Though Elder Pratt noted that God in his goodness had answered the prayers of the exiles on the Ashley River and sent "great showers of rain" which "revived the corn," their joy was presently dashed by a great "haurricane."
Like other colonies, South Carolina after about 1715 came to the attention of the Scotch-Irish of Ulster as well as Scots from Scotland. A substantial group of Scotch-Irish in 1732 settled in Williamsburg township, an area on the Black River, with a port of entry on Winyah Bay. These Scots, forerunners of thousands who arrived in the next forty years, helped to push South Carolina settlements inland from the coast. As in Pennsylvania and other colonies they became typical frontiersmen, hardy and determined, who led the vanguard of white conquerors of the great interior wilderness. If you work with educated term paper writers, it does not ensure immediate solution.
