Using Evidence

Like a lawyer in a jury trial, a writer must convince her audience of the validity of her argument by using evidence effectively. As a writer, you must also use evidence to persuade your readers to accept your claims. But how do you use evidence to your advantage? By leading your reader through your reasoning.

The types of evidence you use change from discipline to discipline--you might use quotations from a poem or a literary critic, for example, in a literature paper; you might use data from an experiment in a lab report.

The process of putting together your argument is called analysis--it interprets evidence in order to support, test, and/or refine a claim. The chief claim in an analytical essay is called the thesis. A thesis writing service provides the controlling idea for a paper and should be original (that is, not completely obvious), assertive, and arguable. A strong thesis also requires solid evidence to support and develop it because without evidence, a claim is merely an unsubstantiated idea or opinion.

rules are published

Each year, auctions are used to determine how billions of dollars of goods and services will be allocated across the globe. On eBay alone, $52.5 billion in merchandise was exchanged in 2.4 billion auctions conducted during fiscal year 2006. Considerable attention has been paid in the academic literature to the question of how to design auctions with efficient allocation and revenue-maximizing properties. However, in part because auction rules are typically published and standard theory assumes economic agents are capable of computing optimal strategies from published rules, little attention has been paid to the question of how to design auctions whose optimal strategies are easy to learn. Evidence suggests that even when auction rules are published and dominant strategies exist, people nonetheless struggle and sometimes fail to learn to play their optimal strategy. As a result, the authors argue that the question of how to design a learnable, strategy-proof auction mechanism is an important one. When I finished the exercise

Every time when I felt upset or sick, I liked to go to a special place where I could relax myself and feel better. It is the club; I have joined the club for 3 years. My sisters recommended this place to me; they told me that I could find many fun there. It's near my house and our hospital, so I walked there in 10 minutes. I usually stayed there for 2 or 3 hours and went home. I loved the club; I felt comfortable there!

The club only allowed women to be members; I didn't worry about my privacy. The club was the biggest women's club in my country. It's located in a basement where there was a lot of space to do the different activities. You could see a beautiful warm water pool in the middle area at first. You could find many big rooms behind the pool; there were a massage pool, a spa shower, a hot room, a cold room, an exercise room, an MTV center, a massage center, and two restaurants.

When I finished my work everyday, I felt so tired. Everyone knew working in the hospital had many stresses. I needed to find a way to help myself to write a descriptive essay; it's the best choice for me. I often took a shower first and swam for 20 minutes to relax my strained muscles. When I finished the exercise, I stayed at the spa massage pool. The strong water waves could massage my whole body. I usually took the oil massage once a month; it's very fun when someone has good skills. Finally, I liked to watch a video and take a nap.

Five-Paragraph Essay

When it comes to college essay writing in college, we all need a place to start. Think of the five-paragraph essay as just that. Some students may find this to be a simple process, while others may spend a greater amount of time understanding this basic building block of college writing. Whatever the case, use the following guidelines to strengthen your knowledge of this preliminary essay format. Five-paragraph essays are incredibly useful in two situations — when writers are just starting out and when a writing assignment is timed.

The five-paragraph essay has three basic parts: introduction, body, and conclusion.

The introduction is the first paragraph of the essay, and it serves several purposes. This paragraph gets your reader's attention, develops the basic ideas of what you will cover, and provides the thesis statement for the essay.

There's nothing like a good argument to get the adrenaline flowing and the brain cells clicking. Whether it's you and your brother arguing about the latest pitcher acquisition for the Red Sox or your banker brother-in-law and Aunt Glad (former union organizer and socialist) having a grand set-to about the incredible salaries of American CEOs, arguing is a fundamental and exciting activity. It doesn't exactly set us apart from the other animals — cats and dogs have been arguing for eons — but the allegedly high level of our discourse and our ability to sustain argument and to change our behavior based on what we learn from argument is surely a hallmark of what it means to be human.

How, though, do we argue in a paper or in argumentative essays , where there is only one of us, the writer? The argumentative essay has to take into consideration the fact that the writer is the only one who has permission to speak; he or she holds the floor, the gavel, and the microphone all at once. What counts in an argumentative essay, then, is the writer's ability to create a sense of interior debate, of allowing other voices their say, and maintaining equilibrium among those voices. It's a matter of fairness and reasonableness.

The research paper writing late Chosŏn poet Kang Wi (1820–1884), also of “middle-person” status, modeled his work after that of Huang Tsun-hsien (1848–1905) of contemporary China. Writing Tip #19: Planning and Writing a Research Paper He expressed deep respect for Su Shih as a poet and studied the painting and calligraphy of the late Ming literatus Tung Ch'i-ch'ang (1555–1636). Kim T'aek-yŏng (1850–1927) was the last great figure in the Korean classical tradition; deeply conversant with late Ch'ing dynasty archaic writing, he was a great admirer of the Ming poet and prose master Kuei Yu-kuang (1506–1571). He later drew direct inspiration from the late Ch'ing reformer Liang Ch'i-ch'ao (1874–1930). His selected anthology of the Korean poetic tradition in Chinese, Yŏhan shipka munch'o (Selections from the Writings of Ten Great Masters of Korean Literature; 1921), has an introduction by Liang Ch'i-ch'ao. Yŏhan shipka munch'o established a canon of Korean literature with all the seriousness of the Chinese literary tradition just at the moment that the Chinese tradition was losing its authority after the annexation of Korea to Japan.

The cv writing service written literatures of the minority nationalities (most of which have rich oral traditions), like the regional literatures of the Han Chinese, had little circulation outside their home areas. WISE Workshops The best-known literary traditions of these peoples were created by the Tibetans, Mongols, Manchus, Uyghurs, and Koreans (living in northeast China) in their respective written scripts. Among other nationalities, such as the Na-hsi (or Na-khi), Yi, and Chuang, indigenous writing systems (usually syllabaries, but occasionally lexigraphies) or systems employing localized versions of Han Chinese characters, were used primarily by shaman-priests or other specialists. The situation with the Tai is somewhat different. The Tai possess several alphabetic writing systems that are spread, as are the Tai themselves, over southwest China, Burma, Laos, northern Thailand, and northwest India. Two of these scripts overlap into China. Literacy among Tai speakers in Sipsongbanna (Hsi-shuang-pan-na), Yunnan, was estimated at 30 to 50 percent during the nineteenth century and likely was higher among Tais elsewhere. Reading ability among Tais was by no means restricted to professional monks, but extended to most adult males in varying degrees.

The second category

The book report online drumsong repertoire can be divided into two formal categories. Online Learning: No Dumb Advice! Book Review: Online Education for ... One is the “big stories” (ta-shu), lengthy texts such as “Hu-chia chuan” (The Story of the Hu Family), “Hui-lung chuan” (Return of the Dragon), and “Erh-tu Mei” (The Second Rescue of Mei), which combine passages of prose with those of song. These texts tend to be very long and involved, with many chapters. The second category are the “short passages” (hsiao-tuan), which tend to be brief, lively stories or select passages from the longer works. The former category is claimed to be closer to the living traditions of drumsongs in terms of textual style, though the longer written texts could be adapted into the living drumsong traditions, as were stories from other styles of vernacular fiction and opera. Although different styles of oral drumsong performance are marked by unique musical styles and delivery, written texts of ku-tz'u and ta-ku libretti are often hard to tell apart, and classification is sometimes difficult. A popular drumsong story, which is still in the living ta-ku tradition, is “Ch'ang-pan p'o” (The Slopes of Ch'ang-pan). The narrative recounts the story of a badly wounded Lady Ni, who decides that she must abandon her child, the princeling A-tou, on the battlefield in General Chao Tzu-lung's care, realizing that her wounds make her a burden. She then commits suicide so that General Chao may survive and defeat the enemy forces. This version of the story is based on the works of Liu Pao-ch'üan (1869–1942), a famous Peking drumsinger, who adapted it from texts of Manchu tzu-ti-shu. The story is also found in the ku-tz'u textual tradition. Kate Steven's English translation is based on a version of the Liu story performed by Chang Ts'ui-feng (1909–1975), one of Liu's female students active in the early decades of the twentieth century. The language of the text is quite literary, Liu having changed very little of the original tzu-ti-shu wording. Stevens notes that aside from employing the “common lexicon” of the vernacular narrative arts, performers could count on at least some audience members already being familiar with the stories from having heard other versions or even from renting texts from copyists at local temple fairs. In addition, it was a custom among some drumsong performers to make lengthy introductions concerning the content of the pieces they were about to perform. This selection is therefore a well-documented example of the often complex and varied interplay between the written and oral traditions in China.

The Nakhi

Living term paper writing in northwest Yunnan province, the Nakhi are found in and around the ancient city of Li-chiang, today a tourist site known for its ancient wooden and stone buildings. 10 WRITING THE RESEARCH PAPER Their forebears, like other Tibeto-Burman-speaking peoples, may have migrated from the steppes of Central Asia millennia ago. They maintained a separate kingdom until they were conquered by the Mongols in the thirteenth century. During the Ming and Ch'ing dynasties, the central government recognized them as a sort of tributary state within the borders of the realm. The Mu were the leading aristocratic clan, whose descendants still live beneath Jade Dragon Mountain (Yü-lung shan), a snowy peak that dominates the Nakhi landscape. Li-chiang was an important trading center on the way to Tibet and a market for goods of the local farmers, herbalists, and mountaineers. The Nakhi and their unique pictographs came to world attention in the 1920s and 1930s thanks to the writing of J. F. Rock, an Austrian explorer and botanist who for decades stayed in a villa outside Li-chiang collecting and translating the religious literature of the ritual specialists known as the tung-pa. Research on the Nakhi written tradition is still carried out at the Tung-pa Writing Research Institute in Li-chiang.

Every college term paper now and then she and her friends would put on an old Manchu performance for themselves, playing hand drums while they sang and danced. Term Paper - University of Minnesota Duluth The tunes they played consisted of very simple, repetitious notes and rhythms, and the women made up the lyrics as they went along. The married women sang about their sex lives, and the virgins asked questions about sex. Being mostly illiterate, the women used this as a way to learn about the facts of life. Through their singing, they also talked to each other about their lives and their husbands, and passed on their gossip. Most of this female line of oral transmission was never recorded; the Women's Script corpus is a striking exception to the norm (for the nature of the script, see chapter 1). The corpus deals overwhelmingly with female grievances, a notion that lies behind local stories about the origin of the curious sloping syllabaryreminiscent of women's needlework. In popular mythology, the invention of Women's Script is attributed to an educated beauty, Hu Yü-hsiu, who was selected to be an imperial concubine. When she fell from favor but remained locked away in the palace, she recorded her grief in a secret script in order to avoid discovery by court eunuchs. Women of her region then competed to master the new script and passed it down to each new generation. Local women named the ingenious script, which could effectively record the sounds of their local language and was infinitely easier and simpler to learn than the sinographs (han-tzu), Women's Script. They did this in order to distinguish it from Chinese character script, which they called Men's Script (nan-shu). The gender distinctions and nature of these two scripts are strikingly similar to those for the Japanese kana syllabary and the kanji (sinographs), when the former were radically simplified from the latter around a thousand years ago.

motive for war

The Indians owed one additional motive for war to the English presence: the desire to secure, their tribal sovereignty from English usurpation, their families from English slavery and peonage, and their lands from English acquisition, whether by judicial confiscation, legal purchase, political annexation, or armed conquest. Poor resume service and you have ineffective resume of anecdotal quality. Whenever a tribe or confederacy decided that to suffer a train of colonial abuses and usurpations was no longer in its best self-interest, it could pursue one of two courses, It could, with the help of a charismatic leader, attempt to revitalize its culture by shunning English goods and associations and thereby recapturing the vital integrity of its imagined or actual past. Or, alternatively, it could launch an undeclared attack on the naked flanks of the offending settlements, much as the Yamasees pounced on South Carolina in 1715.

Indian warfare

Среда, 04 Августа 2010 г. 00:59 + в цитатник
As any student of colonial history knows, Indian warfare was directed not only at other Indians but at Europeans as well. When the English first landed in America they were immediately courted by native tribes seeking their material gifts and an alliance with their superior technology against traditional enemies. Although the Plymouth and Roanoke colonists thought they were asserting their God-given hegemony over the tribesmen of Massasoit and Wingina, they were at the same time being used by the natives for their own calculated purposes. As the English got a firm toehold on the Atlantic plain and began to multiply, the balance of power began to shift. Pre-written custom research paper about any subject and by morning is a right here. The Indians still pursued the politics of selfinterest with consummate skill, learning to play off European competitors and even English colonies against each other. But increasingly their dependence upon English trade and their dangerous proximity to the English settlements (which they said spread faster than a beargrease spot on a blanket) threw them ever more firmly into the political embrace of the English. When the English decided to wage war on the colonies of Spain or France or their Indian allies, therefore, many Indian tribes could not refuse their services as scouts, soldiers, and even sailors. Forced to play the distasteful role of mercenaries in the Englishman's wars, the Indians were reduced to dependence upon his supplies, schedules, and motivations. The ultimate commercialization of warfare, however, came with the English inauguration of scalp bounties as early as 1637. Indian allies--who were familiar with scalping long before the Europeans arrived--were sent out for the scalps of Indians inimical to English interests, the production of which earned a reward in money or trade goods.

important change in native warfare

Среда, 04 Августа 2010 г. 00:57 + в цитатник
Perhaps the most important change in native warfare was the generation of new motives. To the traditional motives of revenge and honor, which remained operative--perhaps dominant--throughout the colonial period, were added the desire to control access to trade centers, to seize hunting land from other tribes, to subjugate contiguous tribes to serve as buffers, to obtain slaves for English markets, and to exterminate tribes who did not lend themselves to the realization of these goals. Need custom essay writing services online – collaborate with reliable writers and buy your essay drafted today. Obviously, the scale of intertribal warfare was greatly enlarged. Small villages whose openness once tested the daring of their enemies now fused into substantial towns encircled by tall palisades. War parties set out more frequently with more men and returned with fewer, requiring genuine periods of peace to recoup spent forces and populations. The torture of captives gradually gave way to their adoption to fill the places of fallen tribesmen. And although war was a male business, the status of women may have risen at home in the men's absence as the producers of the tribe's increasingly agricultural food supply, educators of children, repositories of communal history, and adopters of captives. In some tribes, particularly the Iroquois and most of the southeastern tribes, residence may have become increasingly matrilocal and inheritance matrilineal. On the other hand, as more Indian men died on the warpath, upsetting the balance of the sexes, polygyny may have enjoyed renewed popularity.

The introduction of European firearms

The introduction of European firearms changed all that. Although an arrow was sufficiently lethal, the gun killed faster and more surely, even in the hands of a novice. Wounds were more serious and often developed fatal complications. Native armor could not stop bullets and was quickly abandoned. Professional custom dissertation is very expensive, however, the result is good. In the face of armed Englishmen, large Indian armies wisely dispersed behind trees and adopted the guerrilla tactics for which they are justly famous. "Since the Introduction of Fire Arms [the Iroquois] no longer fight in close bodies," Sir William Johnson observed, "but every Man is his own General. I am inclined to think this circumstance has contributed to lessen the power of a Chief."

The possession of guns

Среда, 04 Августа 2010 г. 00:55 + в цитатник
The possession of guns not only contributed to new causes of warfare but changed the ways the Indians waged it. Before contact, Indian warfare consisted primarily of small-scale raids to avenge a tribesman's death, terrorize an enemy village, or secure prisoners for torture or adoption. Undertaken by a mere handful of volunteers seeking war honors, these raids were considered successful when only two or three scalps had been taken. It is cool to buy custom writing today because the variety is endless. On the warpath and for several days before, the warriors followed a strict course of purification in order to draw divine favor upon their enterprise. Their weapons were bows and arrows, flint knives, and wooden warclubs, used largely in carefully laid ambushes. The only variation on this pattern was an occasional pitched battle between large groups either surrounded by makeshift barricades of logs and brush or protected by woven-cane armor and shields. In such situations the opposing sides kept their distance and lofted arrows at each other with such a trajectory that only the slowest warrior risked serious injury. Before the gun, therefore, Indian warfare was seasonally sporadic, largely symbolic, and relatively low in mortality.
