The Story of Matt and Mello
PT. 3;; “Think about your reputation..”
It all happened so fast. A few days ago everything was as it always had been, he was Mello who bitched at kids so he could enjoy himself on his own, and then all of a sudden some pesky little kid comes in the House and declares him as his friend.
He had let it all happen, without even a sign of struggle. What kind of crazy world was this? In all his time spent here he didn’t even think about having a friend, and now the newest freak joined the gang and made him his fr--!?!
It was kind of fun this evening though.. No, no. Come on, don’t be silly! Friend. What’s that all about anyway? Was he now supposed to be around him all the time, talking and laughing and telling each other secrets? There would be no way he would do that. He had dignity, and he didn’t need no friend. Why did he even started talking with Matt anyway? How come he didn’t punch the kid when he sneaked up at him in the kitchen? Why did he even enter his room and.. It was all too weird. He didn’t want a friend. Those make you weak and soft and.. not Mello-like. What was he going to do with this?
Another bad night sleep, this kid was going to kill him.
Making his way down to the dinner room he thought about what would happen today.
Maybe it isn’t that bad.. No, no, I made my decision. He’s got to go. For my own good.
When he was walking along a table with his plate ready to scoop a rather tasty looking omelet on to it, he saw Matt standing a bit ahead of him. Said one gave a gentle wave and smiled at him, before turning around to watch his own plate.
“Well, well.. What do we have here?”
Mello looked to the other side of the table, and saw Victor standing before him.
Just great... Victor was a jerk, he could guess what was coming..
“I didn’t know you were becoming a sissy. Did I miss out on something?”, he said, nodding in the direction of Matt.
Mello give him a glare. “I am not a sissy”, he hissed.
Victor grinned, a big one, that slapped him right in the face.
“As far as I have heard there is something with you. Word is you’re becoming friendly, and that is something new. Specially when it’s with someone you don’t even know that well! My mates and I, to be honest, had a good laugh at you--”
“Oh yeah?!”, Mello slammed his plate on the table and clenched his fists, “and why is that, if I may ask?”
“I mean, think about your rep man! You’re the only one who Roger warns about when he’s welcoming kids, even I don’t get mentioned, and you’re tossing it all away for some soft-hearted kid?”
At this point a lot of faces were turned in their direction, but none of the two really noticed. Mello reached over the table and grabbed Victor by his collar.
“Listen, you ass, I’m still who I was and there is nobody that is changing it! I live the way I want and I do whatever the heck I want as well, do you get that?”
“Okay man, I’m just saying..”, he pulled his shirt away from Mello’s hand and walked off,
making every kid turn around again.
Mello picked up his plate and set it aside. He wasn’t hungry anymore.. As he looked up he saw Matt, who quickly looked away and showed a great interest in his food.
This all sucked...
He walked to the back of the room, which was claimed as his spot. Nobody dared to set foot there anymore, Mello had made sure of that. It was quiet, somewhat hidden and therefore perfect for him. He sat there and pouted.
So he got mad, that wasn’t any different. But the question is, did he get angry because that freak insulted him? Or was he sticking up for Matt? He groaned a little. This was confusing! Matt was confusing. When they were gaming together it really had been fun, and when he showed him how to hold the console.. Wow, nooo. There was nothing about that. No sir, he did not want to think about that. It wasn’t relevant to the subject anyway. The subject, and the truth, was; he had fun. Matt was nice. He just wasn’t there to beam it in his head when he was thinking about it last night. Mello sighed. He didn’t really like feeling confused...
“Do you want to talk to me..?”
Mello heard the question, although it was almost as soft as a whisper.
He looked up to see Matt, standing there and looking more awkward than a stripping hippo.
“Yeah, sure, take a seat.”
Matt sat down, but didn’t talk to him.
“Do you know the guy that was walking to you?”, Matt asked, trying to look him in the eyes but only managed to stare at the zipper of Mello’s vest.
“Yeah.. Yeah, I do.”
Matt didn’t say anything, just sat there. It ticked Mello off, but on the other hand, his mind started to clear up and he thought of something..
“I eh.. We were in detention together a lot of the time. He’s a jerk.”
“I assumed, I mean.. I heard him talk and he’s not really a gentlemen, sort to speak.”
Mello puffed through his nose in some kind of a half-laugh.
“I think he thought we were mates, he’s probably jealous now.”
Matt dared to look him in the eye.
“Do you think that’s why he said that?”
“I do think that, he knows that hits me right in the stomach.”
Matt looked away again, poking with a fork in his pudding.
“That.. used to hit me right in the stomach.”
This time the redhead did look him straight in the eyes, and gave a genuine smile.
“So you..! I mean.. Do.. Ehm..”
“Matt, I do want to hang out with you, I really enjoyed myself last night.”
He grinned at Mello, also a big one, but this one did not slap him in the face.
It more.. Tickled him in the tummy.
“Ah, the lovebirds made up, how adorable.”
Matt’s grin disappeared as soon as he found out who was standing next to them.
That poor pudding was being forked like he had said it.
“You know what Victor--”, Mello started as he stared at Matt’s plate.
“I do not want to be rude, but I think you should back off.”
Mello looked at Matt with widened eyes, as he had stood up and was now almost glaring at Victor.
“Oh please, what do you want to do, wuss?”
“Basically, I want you to stop bothering us. I can’t help it that you have to imagine ‘mates’ with who you can laugh at the one that doesn’t want to be with you, so no need to take it out on me right? So, Vomit, or whatever you call yourself, please get your ugly being away from me before I really get mad.”
Matt sat back down again, being stared at by both Victor and Mello.
“I.. I’ll get you for this.”
Not knowing what else to say, Victor turned his back to them and stomped off.
As Matt calmly picked up his fork again, Mello quickly picked up his pudding and threw it across the room; striking Victor right on his bottom.
“Oh, man, that is so awesome!”, Matt cried while he fell of his seat and rolled over the floor with tears in his eyes, “Poor pudding!” he laughed while holding his stomach.
Victor had turned around and was scowling at Mello.
“That’s what you get for not being nice to my friend!”, Mello said.
And when he checked if Matt wasn’t looking, he added a threatening glare to it.
Victor got the message. ‘If you want to live, back off.’
And without realizing it, Victor had taken away all of Mello’s doubts of his friendship with Matt.
