vintage hair.

Дневник

Пятница, 23 Января 2009 г. 19:02 (ссылка) + в цитатник
hey girlies.
i'm new to the community, i mostly lurk. i haven't had much time
to post an introduction.
my work has put me on a probation-type period, so i need to prove myself
to them for the next two weeks in order to keep my hours from getting cut.
so, i need to start looking more professional.
i work at a doctors office, which usually consists of scrubs, a messy bun, and hardly any makeup.
which is the total opposite of how i am away from work.
i am extremely infatuated with the 1940's and 50's. i'm very good at mimicking the clothing,
but the hair i can never get down.
so i wanted to try this style.

now, i have bangs, all one length, theyre kind of grown out past my eyes a little.
can some vintage fashionista give me directions how to do this?
i know it's basic round brush and finger waves, but i'm not quite sure how to accomplish this :(
thanks for your help. i'll do a proper introduction soon.

Good Food in NYC

Дневник

Пятница, 23 Января 2009 г. 19:02 (ссылка) + в цитатник

I'm going to New York in a week to interview at Parsons The New School for Design. Im staying with my friend who is a freshmen at Parsons and her dorm is near Union Square. So where can you find good, cheap food in New York? Where's the best places to people watch? Or to get coffee and sit with my laptop for a few hours?

And I was also curious if the skating rink is still open in Central Park, and how much might that cost?

This post follows on from i_love_gravity's post about the film Candy. I've never seen Candy, but what she said about it summing up an entire part of her life stuck with me a bit, and made me think about my favourite film - Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

The 2001 film is directed and stars John Cameron Mitchell (see also, Shortbus) and tells the story of an East Berlinian young man, who underwent a sex change operation in order to marry a lieutenant and escape his communist home for the USA. The operation goes wrong, leaving Hedwig with an 'Angry Inch,' - also the name of the band she goes on to form as she shadows the tour of Tommny Gnosis - the guy she originally wrote the entirety of the films musical material with before he steals it as his own and goes on to become a global superstar.

The style is bold and glamourous, ballsy, but heartfelt underneath it all, and the underlying story is one of change and transition, and Hedwig finding out who she really is. When i first saw it in 2006 I was undergoing a period not dissimilar (without the gender-change, of course), but with similar feelings of not really knowing who i was. It took a long time to get through that and sortof 'find myself,' but this film just sums it up entirely.

I don't want to give too much of the film away as i believe everyone should watch it. Alas, apart from two of my cousins, no one i know has ever even heard of it. I wondered if anyone on here has?

Two, quite different, songs from the film:

1. Wicked Little Town
/www.youtube.com/v/om8ms-ETEk8&hl=en&fs=1">http://www.youtube.com/v/om8ms-ETEk8&hl=en&fs=1">a> name="allowFullScreen" value="true">/www.youtube.com/v/om8ms-ETEk8&hl=en&fs=1">http://www.youtube.com/v/om8ms-ETEk8&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344">

2. Sugar Daddy

I'll keep it short, but (hopefully) sweet: My name is Helen, aged 19 from lovely Blackburn, England. I'm doing a pre-degree foundation course in Art and Design and am applying for Fine Art and History of art next year. I love fasion and photography, but don't sit and call myself a fashion addict and photographer because i buy Vogue and take photos of my friends. Patrick Demarchelier is my favourite fashion photographer. I like any music, haven't seen half as many films as i ought to have done, and sadly, don't have much time for reading anymore, but love to get stuck into a good book when i can

choose your life.

helllooo everybody.

i have a major dileema.
literally.
i'm in the second semester of my sophomore year at college.
and i have NO idea what i want to do with my life.
well. kind of.
and i need your help.

many of you have jobs and careers or are working towards something.
and you all seem so talented and passionate.

come inside the cut and meet me....i would LOVELOVELOVE any advice you have to give about picking a direction or job or major or anything really!
so tell me,

what do you do???

(i'm the one looking at the camera lolll)

i'm super clumsy and i break a lot of stuff by accident.

my best friend/roommate think she's Martha Stewart (not really....but maybe...)

i adore my little brother.

i have the most AMAZING boyfriend/best friend ever. seriously. he's fucking epic.
and he lets me convince him to dress up like Alex from A Clockwork Orange for Halloween (minus the cod piece)

i have an unhealthy obsession with Minus the Bear (and Band of Horses)

i'm addicted to planners. it's bad. and post its. and lists oh my god lists. and i'm pretty sure i own 1,0000000 pens.
i don't do pencils (often)

oh yeah, my liking for photography has turned into an obsession of a hobby.

things that i like:
sudoku & crossword puzzles
Lucky brand purses
minnatonka mocs
purple and white hair
salt
passion herbal tea lemonade
READING
featherbeds
PHOTOGraphy
school
featherbeds
journaling
bookmaking (working on it)
fall weather
supertarget
inman perk chai (fellow atlantans should recognize lol)
organizing
Weeds

i thought at first i wanted to be a graphic designer.
but now i'm sure i don't. kind of. i go to Georgia State University and it's like, if i'm going to major in that, why don't i just go to SCAD?? mostly i think i like LOOKING at design and being in awe of it....but i DONT love the idea of spending my life on a computer. and my art dept. director told me in these words "you will end up hating your life if you do graphic design. you give up your soul...but only do it if you're prepared for that because you love it that much". which i'm not. i'm into giving up my soul for anything, really. not to mention, it's SO hard to make it in the artistic world.
there are so many people who areALWAYS going to own you in the talent area.
and i'm so afraid i would fail at it or hate it.

then i thought about doing english.
i ADOOOOOOOOORE reading. fucking love it want to marry it.
and i'm fairly good at writing (i always had a thing for it since i was young. thanks to mom for teaching me to read at a stupid early age). but i'm not sure what i would do with it. im not sure i could be a writer or that i would enjoy that life. i also don't think i could be a teacher (maybe). the part of writing that i like is analyzing the hell out of it and talking about it with people. and everyone is so intimidating in the english world. like...really intimidating.

and then....stemming from the english thing....
i was thinking something in Linguistics/Psychology area.
but i'm not sure what that entail really, job wise.
i took to AP Psych in high school like no other and it fasinates me to no end. i def. could not be a therapist though, done enough of that in my short life of 20 years haha.

i would think about photography but my heart lies with analogue.

so, i'm confused. as hell. mostly, i am afraid of picking the wrong thing. and hating it or being bad at it.
simple fears but they seem to grow bigger when i don't even know what i want to do with my life.

so i thought i would ask you all for advice. tell me what YOU DO...major, job, career....anything.
and of course, new friends are nice, too.

please and thanks : )

Blogs!

Дневник

Четверг, 22 Января 2009 г. 07:02 (ссылка) + в цитатник
I recall a post about blogs and blogging some time ago, but I've searched back and can't seem to locate it (it may actually have been much longer ago than I thought). So, I thought I'd make a new one!

I recently set up a blog, leaning towards a photo-blog as I'm a photographer but really just a place to express myself visually both through my own work and through the things that inspire me or take my fancy.

You can find the blog here or you can read it through the syndicated feed.

What I want to know is;
Do you have a blog?
What are your favourite blogs?
What kind of blogs do you read (fashion? photo? political?)

I want to know all about your blogging habits! For inspiration, so please share!

Also, since I hate leaving a post without any visuals, here are some photos I shot on a portfolio request for Dazed and Confused magazine a few months ago. I am completely new to fashion photography, having only studied and worked as a fine art and editorial photographer so it's nothing mindblowing - just some black and white portraits. As I know most of you have a much more refined eye for this kind of thing. However, I had so much fun that I definately want to give it a go again!

Thanks for looking! :)

As a little girl I wanted to be:
a) a ballerina
b) a werewolf

Both of these goals remain unrealized, but still occupy a dear place in my heart. Lately I've been reading about ballet and finding a lot of inspiration in the aesthetics of it all. I thought that you all might enjoy some of my favourite finds (videos, photographs).

Sylvie Guillem

Margot Fonteyn

Swan Lake

Cinderella

Isadora Duncan and her pupils
"Dancing: The Highest Intelligence in the Freest Body."

Maybe not ballet, but beautiful.

Anna Duncan

Misc.
Alicia Alonso in Giselle, 1963

Cinderella Act 1, Bolshoi Ballet

I still dance, but now only around my house when I'm alone.
Absolutely the picture of grace.

Exploring the netherworlds of nonfiction

Дневник

Четверг, 22 Января 2009 г. 07:02 (ссылка) + в цитатник
It seems that a lot of us in this community have been impacted by fictional tales via film and literature, but what about the stories that were actually true? I'm looking for your favorite books on history, particular more subversive viewpoints on well-known stories or some very obscure ones.

I am thirsty for a connection to generations past because I am very much missing my old town in Pennsylvania:

We had a lot of historical landmarks and natural spaces, and it was easy to feel that spooky closeness to the people who existed long ago. I live in Florida now in a town that's pretty new, and so I'm trying to find some good reads to re-discover the magic of history :) Thank you for any pointers you may give!

Edit: Thank you so much everyone for all the book suggestions! :)

Hello! I don't think I've ever posted in this community before; I'm not even too big on commenting (eventhough I love most of the entries). I'm comming here with a small request, but also with a sort-of an introduction. Nice to meet you all, now I will proceed on with my post..
Me and my friends are going to Paris this Spring and, as we have no idea about what, where, why, when in Paris, I'm asking you to help me! Please, share information about any good shops- clothes shops, coffee shops; any interesting places which are not specifically "tourist cites". We enjoy young fashion designers and contemporary art, so anything that has to do with one of those is pretty welcome. Thank you!
As about me, my name's Evelina and I'm 17 years of age. I'm half-Bulgarian, half-Belarusian and I currently live in Bulgaria; I used to live and study in Japan until two weeks ago, though. In a nutshell, I love fashion, cinematography and baseball. To put it more in detail..

I always say I like "fashion, cinematography and baseball", because that's the easiest thing to do- there's actually a lot of things I like or dislike. I like music, but I don't really care about what I listen to. Last.fm says "japanese, female vocalists, punk, electronic, indie, alternative, new wave, rock, ambient", but I don't really trust it, seeing that Miley Cyrus song up there. And, no, I'm not ashamed about liking Miley.
I shall repeat myself and say I don't care about music. Yet, I can't help but always point out how much I adore my all time vocal love- Shiina Ringo:

My taste in movies is a bit simillar to my taste in music- it usually starts (or ends) with "japanese", as the majority of what I watch is, indeed, japanese. I do watch other cinema, of course- I rather enjoy Kim Ki-duk's movies, some french movies here and there, old russian and bulgarian movies, as that's what I grew-up to, and, if it'a good, Hollywood's latest piece.
You could always look through my movie reviews to see what I'm currently obsessing over, but they're all in Bulgarian and probably would be of no help to you.

If I was a man, my style icon would probably be Odagiri Joe. Because I am a woman (or probably still a girl), I simply adore him, without trying and failing to grow a beard.
For those who have no idea who he is, he is a Japanese actor, starring in movies such as "Scrap Heaven", "Bright Future", "Maison de Himiko" and the new Kim Ki-duk movie "Dream". There's probably people, who would call him the "japanese Johnny Depp", but I personally despise the idea of calling talanted and unique foreign actors "(insert country here) Johnny Depp". And, besides, Johnny has kind of gone way down on my list of talanted and unique actors..

As for fashion.. it's my biggest passion, probably. I've gone through many periods in my life- I used to be a punk, I used to dress in hip-hop inspired clothes, I even used to be a mallgoth (which I fail to know the right spelling of). Nowadays, I try to kick it more simple- second hand stores and designer clothes. I'm a huge fan of Comme des Gar

Candy is a movie that, even with the smallest details included sum up a HUGE part of my life with someone that I would consider my soulmate, my best friend, my heart.
See my last real journal entry to understand further.

But this got me to thinking, I wonder if I'm the only one this crazy or if movies, or books HAUNT, i mean really just HAUNT everyone else to, I'd like to know yours.

If you haven't seen Candy starring Heath Ledger and Abbie Cornish, I highly suggest it, It will change your whole world. It's beautiful & honest, all most too much so.

We all know that food has an effect on our emotions. Certain foods in particular. For example: chocolate, coffee, tea, spices, and Jelly Bellies. These, I feel, have an element of comfort, nostalgia, and yes, even style and sophistication. I love when non-edible things are named after these, like mocha hair dye, green tea body spray, chocolate leather, and the song Cinnamon Girl. See's Candy is my favorite chocolate, partly because I've been eating it since I was a little kid and I love the 'old-fashioned-ness' of it. I love Seattle's Best vanilla coffee, cause it's the most 'vanilla-y' of any coffee I've ever tasted. I love peppermint tea cause it's got a natural sweetness and calms my stomach. It's hard to pick a favorite spice, but Nutmeg is so versatile and a bit mysterious(it's a bit hard to describe and supposedly can be deadly or cause hallucinations in large doses). As for Jelly Bellies, my eyes roll to the back of my head with joy when I eat the pear flavor, however I also love mixing them up to create recipes!

What are your favorites among these and why? How do they affect your life? How do they make you feel?

I was just looking at some images from the new Top Shop spring 09 stuff, and my jaw dropped when I saw one of the dresses because it is almost identical to a vintage one that I sold last month in my etsy shop last month! The crazy leggings are also similar to some that I just sold. Regardless of whether or not you like the clothes, you have to admit it's pretty weird/funny! The fabric on the dresses is basically the same and the cut is similar too.

Have you ever found some vintage clothing only to find that it's just like a new look from designers/retailers? Any trends that you're predicting for the upcoming warmer months?

Also, what do you think of the new Topshop stuff? I'm not surprised to see more glitter after all the sparkly stuff on the runways last year, and I like some of the colors (coral mixed with grays) although I'm not really that fond of any of the looks or individual pieces, except for a couple of the dresses. The gray multi-strap maryjanes are kind of cute, it's amazing how that trend is really going nuts. So many straps!

JEUX D'ENFANTS

Julien Jeanvier: Sophie was back in the game! Pure, raw, explosive pleasure! Better than drugs, better than smack! Better than a dope-coke-crack-fix-shit-shoot-sniff-ganja-marijuana-blotter-acid-ecstasy! Better than sex, head, 69, orgies, masturbation, tantrism, Kama Sutra or Thai doggy-style! Better than banana milkshakes! Better than George Lucas's trilogy, the muppets and 2001! Better than Emma Peel, Marilyn, Lara Croft and Cindy Crawford's beauty mark! Better than the B-side to Abbey Road, Jimmy Hendrix and the first man on the moon! Space Mountain, Santa Claus, Bill Gates' fortune, the Dalai Lama, Lazarus raised from the dead! Schwarzenegger's testosterone shots, Pam Anderson's lips! Woodstock, raves... Better than Sade, Rimbaud, Morrison and Castaneda! Better than freedom, better than life!

I'm gonna have to say this is, by far, my favourite movie in history of forever.

Who has experience buying frames online, i.e., without trying them on first? Any tips? How do you feel about non-prescription wearers? The increasingly popular oversized, pedo-chic style? Okay. I have no where else to turn. I am truly stuck between regular leather or patent leather for the YSL oversized Muse bag I am looking to purchase. So I ask you, people with taste, what is your opinion?

Regular Leather

Patent Leather

Any sort of insight as to why you would choose either one would be very helpful. I know that regular leather is more classic, but patent leather is more my style and personality (which I understand can change at the drop of a hat, but still..) I figure anyone who's a member of this community actually has an opinion worth listening to.

I appreciate it!

Somebunny Likes Zines

Дневник

Среда, 14 Января 2009 г. 14:37 (ссылка) + в цитатник
Hey kids! I was wondering how many of you out there dabble in the zine scene. The little cut-and-pasted, xeroxed, messily stapled confections have played a huge part in my growing up, especially through the throes of high school. Zines have introduced me to prisoners who claim to have been framed by the C.I.A., to girls in small towns with big ballooning hopes, to struggling mothers balancing school and work. What are your experiences with zines and the DIY community in general? Do you have a certain one that set your head on fire a bit? I've always felt that the most intimidating part of putting out an issue is the unapologetic (and sometimes violent) honesty of the writing. It's a bit like entering a room completely nekkid.

It's been a while since the last issue of Godzilla Says Hi, but I am excited/anxious/relieved to announce issue no. 6. Some of it is fact, some of it is fiction, and some of it is neither. Because of the time lapse and newborn self-consciousness, no. 6 took over 4 months to write as I bounced back and forth from Berkeley to the OC, California. Vignettes on 4:20, childhood, lights & sounds, fiction, and all that good, swirly real life stuff.

A little excerpt:
"Or what about when we sat on the bench and lit our first cigarettes, laughing about the steaming orange bulbs that hung from our lips? The other girls stood off in the distance, and we could feel their disapproval from miles away. We had just eaten giant pizookies from BJ's, chocolate chip with vanilla ice cream. We crossed our legs in the same direction."

P.S. If you'd like one, order info is in my journal :)

Talk to me!

Intro + travel

Дневник

Вторник, 13 Января 2009 г. 20:32 (ссылка) + в цитатник
Hello Black Ciggaretters!

I have recently returned home after 16 months travelling around the world and I though I would make a post about my favourite experiences plus a few of my favourite snapshots.

&&&

Mini intro..
I am: 22, Australia, Freckles, fringe, florals and strawberry blonde hair.
Style icons: Zoey Deschanel, Kate Nash, Kirsten Dunst, Michelle Williams
Music: Hello Saferide, Josh Pyke, Dallas Green, Benjamin Gibbard, Shout Out Louds
Things: Ocean, mixtapes, holga cameras, swing dancing and riding my bike!

I left Australia in June 2007 and worked at a summer camp in the USA for a few months, went up to Canada to spend the Autumn in the east and the winter in the west. After my freezing winter I headed south to Mexico for a few weeks then back up to the USA for a cross country road trip LA - NYC. June 2008 I arrived in the UK to work for a few months then a few final months of backpacking through western Europe then at long last.. HOME! So this is my community intro aswell I guess, hello! Don't expect to see alot of fashion as obviously I had one backpack and three outfits maximum! Plus in general I am not very fashionable. If there is one thing you should know about me it is that I want to travel eternally until I am all out travel juice but that doesn't seem to happening any time soon as I am already planning another huge journey for later this year.

Anyway here goes! All photos taken from my FLICKR

USA
Boating Dock
My camp experience included living in tents with black bears hanging around in the Pennsylvanian mountains, a whole lotta singing, smores and tie dye tshirts galore!

Viva Las Vegas
I wish all lights were as bright and tacky as the ones in Vegas.

I heart NY
True story. New York.

Stylin' it!
Myself looking pretty stylish and ENTHUSED in Monument Valley!

FAVOURITE USA CITIES: New York, New Orleans, San Antonio, Las Vegas
TOP USA MOMENTS:
-Hiking in the humid Grand Canyon in the daytime and then waking up the next moring (in a tent!) to find SNOW! In the Grand Canyon!! BEST!!
-Seeing Rent on Broadway!
-All the national parks and the Navajo Nation
