The Best of Billie Holiday: The Master Takes and Singles (4CD)
Columbia, 2008

This box comes from "The Original Masters series" and its entire title would be "The Best of Billie Holiday: The Master Takes And Singles", the tracklist and mastering is exactly the same of the box "Lady Day - The Master Takes And Singles".
the difference stands in the package and booklet/informations that on this one are poor compared with the more famous "Lady Day - The Master Takes And Singles", it's a question of price that on this one is really a bargain one, but the music that is the most important thing is the same.
Columbia made a different selling commercial choose releasing this one as Sony/BMG at a cheap price and the other one under Columbia/Legacy with a bit different title and deluxe package, IMHO "the best" of is a title quite misleading coming these songs only from her early years, but Billie is great as always, nobody like her can give me the same feelings and emotions, her voice and way to sing are incomparable IMHO.

2008 four CD set. The Original Masters series presents some of the finest recordings by many of the true Jazz legends originally signed to the RCA and Sony labels. With hits, favorites, album tracks, rarities and more, these collections are solid samplers for the aficionados and astounding introductions to those interested in investigating the roots of Jazz. This collection from the famed vocalist features 80 tracks including 'I Wished on The Moon', 'Summertime', 'St. Louis Blues', 'Night & Day' and more.
CD universe

Billie Holiday's story is so huge, her artistry so vast, and her impact so incalculable, that even attempting to corral a representative sampling of it within a single collection of recordings is an overwhelming, perhaps foolhardy task. Many have tried, of course, and literally hundreds of options of varying quality and legitimacy, scattered across dozens of labels, are available to the consumer. Neophytes, or those not willing to commit to a gargantuan listening session, can settle for any number of single- or double-CD best-ofs that adequately present Holiday's most important, better-known music. Columbia/Legacy's single-disc God Bless the Child: The Very Best of Billie Holiday and the same label's two-disc 2001 Lady Day: The Best of Billie Holiday are ideal for that purpose, the crøme de la Billie, devoid of anything not directly tied to her legend. Meanwhile, the devotee, the collector, and the completist can take ownership of massive pieces of the catalog in box sets that might be lavish and smartly curated or shoddy and unworthy. Among the more essential boxed collections of an American artist's work is Legacy's 2001 ten-CD Lady Day: The Complete Billie Holiday on Columbia (1933-1944), whose title speaks for itself: everything the singer recorded for the label during those formative years -- her greatest -- is offered in one place, with no value judgment being made as to what's worthy of inclusion and what isn't. Lady Day: The Master Takes and Singles pares that same body of material down to four CDs that go beyond the two-disc set yet don't attempt to make a definitive statement. That earlier mega-box was broken down into six discs of master takes and four of alternate takes and other ephemera. Here the masters are again whittled down, to a total of 80, making for a more manageable and, honestly, more listenable set. These are the songs that made Billie Holiday Billie Holiday, arranged chronologically and sensibly, with an eye not toward the scholar but toward the fan. Like the larger box, one can follow the trajectory of Holiday's ascent here, but it's not as easy to get lost or even bored. Needless to say, the Columbia/Legacy sets only cover Holiday's output for that label and its subsidiaries, and those in pursuit of the larger picture will have to locate the later recordings she made for Commodore, Decca, and Verve elsewhere, although that should not be difficult.

Culled from the Columbia Records reissue packages, variously released under the multivolume Quintessential Billie Holiday umbrella, this package goes straight for the love songs, the heart of Holiday. Ranging from such playful lyrics as "Let's Do It" and "Them There Eyes" to such essential Holiday as "You Go to My Head," "The Very Thought of You," and "Easy Living," this set is guaranteed to keep the home fires burning brightly. Lay this one on your lover next Valentine's Day. As was so frequently the case with Holiday, the ensemble support is impeccable, including many of the swingers from Columbia's Greatest Hits package. The bonus here is Count Basie on piano, leading his swinging big band on "They Can't Take That Away from Me."

No covers, sorry

Most of this excellent CD features one of Billie Holiday's finest concert recordings of the 1950s. Recorded in Europe before an admiring audience, this enjoyable set finds Lady Day performing seven of her standards with her trio and joining in for jam session versions of "Billie's Blues" and "Lover Come Back to Me" with an all-star group starring clarinetist Buddy DeFranco, vibraphonist Red Norvo and guitarist Jimmy Raney. These performances (which find Holiday in stronger voice than on her studio recordings of the period) have also been included in Verve's massive CD box set. This program concludes with Holiday's four rare sides for Aladdin in 1951 (between her Decca and Verve periods) which are highlighted by two blues and "Detour Ahead," and her 1942 studio recording of "Trav'lin' Light" with Paul Whiteman's Orchestra.

Chet Baker - Baker's Holiday

BAKER'S HOLIDAY is an endearing and smoky tribute to singing legend Billie Holiday. Backed by a smartly arranged reed section, Chet Baker and his quartet swing with great dynamism on all 10 tracks. Jimmy Mundy's arrangements give this album the feel of a 1940's big band, and Baker seems comfortable recreating some of the mystique and elegance of a bygone era.

On this album, Baker plays only the flugelhorn; the instrument's dark and mellow tone only adds to Baker's already wistful sense of melodiousness. We hear this most poignantly on "Don't Explain," a composition co-written by Billie Holiday herself. Here, Baker mournfully "sings" the melody on his horn, while an English horn echoes him hauntingly. Baker sings on four of the 10 tracks, and his boyish, soft-spoken singing style is right at home with these classic tunes. Here, without copying Holiday, Baker through his elusive musical genius conjures her magic.

Review by Scott Yanow
Baker's Holiday finds Chet Baker effectively paying tribute to Billie Holiday with mellow trumpet solos and occasional vocals. Baker is backed by a full sax section and a four-piece rhythm section that includes pianist Hank Jones; Jimmy Mundy contributed the colorful arrangements. His performance of ten songs associated with Lady Day (most of which he had not recorded previously) is often exquisite.

Masters Of American Music, Vol. 2: Lady Day - The Many Faces Of Billy Holiday
2009

Video NTSC (4:3)
Audio:English 2.0

DVD, 3.47Gb

The black and white footage from the thirties of groups of people merrily swing dancing, paired with a bumptious, and swingin’ number Billie Holiday performed with Count Basie called “Swing Me Count”, makes one wonder what it might have been like to actually be there.

The movie Lady Day: The Many Faces Of Billie Holiday paints an interesting, and thought provoking portrait of one of jazz and blues most charismatic, and influential artists. The incomparable talent of Billie Holiday, both truth and legend are immortalized in this one-hour documentary film. The film follows Holiday, also referred to as “Lady Day” or “Lady”, through the many triumphs and trials of her career, and does it’s very best to separate the facts from fiction. Her autobiography Lady Sings The Blues is used as a rough guide of how she desired her life story to be viewed by her public. Those who knew her, worked with her, and loved her paint a different picture than this popular, and mostly fictional autobiography. Interview footage of her colleagues, fellow musicians, and friends such as Annie Ross, Buck Clayton, Mal Waldron, and Harry “Sweets” Edison look back on their years of friendship and experiences with the woman they affectionately call “Lady”. Their anecdotes, fond memories, and descriptive way of describing Holiday’s unique talent and style, show the Lady that they knew and loved. The film also makes interesting use of photographs and orignal recordings of Holiday, along with movie footage of different eras. With the use of these devices, we get a feel for what Holiday’s music meant for the audience it reached. The black and white footage from the thirties of groups of people merrily swing dancing, paired with a bumptious, and swingin’ number Billie Holiday performed with Count Basie called “Swing Me Count”, makes one wonder what it might have been like to actually be there. To wildly swing dance to the live vocals of Billie Holiday must have been an amazing experience, as this film demonstrates. The most enduring and alluring part of the film is the live footage of Holiday performing, either in a band with one of her idols, Louis Armstrong, or in her first film role as a maid, or in her later televised performances in the fifties. It was not Lady’s vocal talent that made her what she was. It was her delivery, performance style, charisma, and impeccably beautiful dramatization of even the most banal little number that made an impression on audiences. The footage of her singing the song “Strange Fruit” is one of the most amazing and alarming things in the film. As the audience looking in, we feel every word she sings, with a bit of awe, tinged with the horrid reality of what the song is about. This particular song was not recorded for many years due to the subject matter; lynching of African Americans in the South. This film shows Holiday as a enduring symbol of her art, a student of a life that was seldom kind or easy, a talented and alluring performer beloved by her audience, and a master of musical interpretation. I found the film to be highly enjoyable, and absolutely fascinating. I have always been a fan of Billie Holiday since I could remember, but it this particular film piqued my interest, and showed a true legend in both her prime, and the moments of her demise. It is done well enough to do justice to her work, as well as to her legend. I would definitely recommend it.

<![CDATA[Lady Sings The Blues (10 CD)]]>
Lady Sings the Blues, 10 CD box-set
Membran, 2009

Flac (cue+log), 1.4 Gb
Mp3 320 kbps, 1.2 Gb

Membran.

<![CDATA[All of Me]]> (404x400, 62Kb)

All of Me
Marshall Cavendish, Digitally Remastered, 1995

ape (log+cue), 249 mb
mp3 320 kbps, 170 mb

As I said in my review of Sony's two CD set Lady Day, this out-of-print Billie Holiday compilation, originally sold with issue one of the Jazz Greats magazine series, is the best possible sounding single disc introduction to the singe in her prime: if you don't have a Holiday album, start here.
Like most CDs in the Jazz Greats series, transfers were made by the late John R.T. Davies, who really understood how to preserve the original sound: too many CDs of public domain (over fifty years old) recordings have the life drained out of them in an effort to obliterate the scratches; doing this, however, means that you destroy what Davies called the "air" in a recording - and in any case the listener's ear is able to tune out much of the noise anyway.
The sound of the Sony 2 disc set is okay (better than their earlier Quintessential Billie Holiday series) but in places sounds too bright, so that the individual elements, the various instruments and voice, don't sound quite right in relation to each other; Davies, a musician himself, allows you to hear everything in the appropriate sound perspective (or whatever the term is), and it's easier to listen for a sustained period as a result, and delight in details of the backing as well as the singing.
I'm going on about this because there are lots of bad transfers out there; the quality of the performances is not in question - as Benny Green said, almost everything Billie Holiday recorded in her early days became art, no matter the Tin Pan Alley-ish origins of the song.
The selection of performances itself is just about faultless, not that choosing classics can have been much of a task. Billie's Blues is a live version, however, not the studio original. You also get a track by Ethel Waters and a duet with Louis Armstrong. It's not representative of her entire career (see Lady Day review for a summary of three distinct stages in her recording life): as the magazine was issued in 1996 they wouldn't have been able to include recordings after the mid-forties - but many would consider that a blessing: here you have her at her springtime best.

The received wisdom on the tragic torch singer's later work--of these 35 tracks, six were recorded in 1946 and '47, and the rest in the '50s--is that her interpretive skill made up for the collapse of her voice. In fact, the serious cracks in her pitch don't appear until the second disc of this set, and it doesn't approach the febrile croak of Lady in Satin until the END. But she relies on a handful of vocal tricks, and some numbers that had been in her repertoire for ages, to approximate the glory that her voice once was. At times, though, the results are lovely and heartbroken rather than saddening, especially with the simpatico musical backing she got in these sessions.

This two CD set, with incredible liner notes by Leonard Maltin, Yes, the Television guy, is a landmark release. The chosing of ALL the material here is very carefully thought out, not like others, with whatever they can get to fit, whatever condition, this one is constructed top to bottom with perfection. This set displays Billie in all her Autumn glory, from live recordings, to outtakes that are better than the originals. If you want a set that represents what Billie meant in her later years, get this one. It will take you down her many paths, of pathos, despair, happiness, and just great talent, period. An EXCELLENT starter set.

There is an on-going dispute between Holiday fans: is Billie Holiday more interesting at the beginning of her career, when her voice was at its best, or at the end of her career, when her interpretive skills were at their finest? My preference is for the latter, and LADY IN AUTUMN offers a truly fine sampling of later Billie Holiday recordings.
Even at its youthful best, Billie Holiday's distinctive, very quirky voice was never noted for any of the qualities we usually applaud in great singers: Holiday's range, power, and breath support were always more than a little ify. But Holiday showed a remarkable facility for shaping her voice much as sculptor might, and she transformed her vocal defects into an astonishing personal idiom that has never failed to mix musical delight with raw emotional power. And this ability was at its height toward the end of her career.
It is true, however, that Holiday's later recordings are an acquired taste, and listeners who are new to her unique stylings may be put off by the vocal roughness of her later work. But for those who have already listened to an enjoyed her earlier work, Billie Holiday's LADY IN AUTUMN will be a revelation.
